PM Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY)

  • Ministry: Launched in 2016 by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare.
  • Type: Central Sector Scheme
  • Aims & Objectives:
  • Financial support to farmers suffering crop loss/ damage, stabilizing their income and ensuring flow of credit to the agriculture sector.
  • Adoption of innovative & modern agricultural practices and crop diversification.
  • Eligibility: Farmers, including sharecroppers and tenant farmers, growing notified crops in notified areas
  • Premium Payable by Farmers:
  • For Kharif crops – 2%
  • For Rabi crops – 1.5%
  • For commercial and horticultural crops – 5%
  • Premium by Government: Shared equally (50:50) by the Central and State Governments; Except for North-Eastern and Himalayan states (90:10)

Environmental Clearance (EC) in India                            

  • EC is required in India for projects that can significantly impact the environment.
  • EIA Notification, 2006 lists over 39 types of activities (mining, infrastructure, power plants, etc.) that need EC prior to start of a project.
  • Categorization of Projects:
  • Projects are divided into Category A and Category B under the EIA Notification.
  • Category A projects:  Considered at the Central level in the Ministry of Environment,Forest & Climate Change (MoEF&CC)
  • Category B projects:   Handled at the State level by the State/UT Environmental Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA).

In the category of best state, Maharashtra has been ranked 1st, followed by Gujarat and Haryana under 6th National Water Awards (2024).

  • National Water Awards
  • Instituted by: By Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Ministry of Jal Shakti
  • Aim: To create awareness among people about importance of water and motivate them to adopt the best water usage practices.
  • Presented in 10 categories: Best State, Best District, Best Village Panchayat, Best Urban Local Body, Best School or College, Best Industry, Best Water User Association, Best Institution (other than school or college), Best Civil Society and Best individual.

Codex Alimentarius Commission

  • Genesis: Intergovernmental body established jointly by the FAO and WHO in 1963.
  • Objective: Protecting consumer’s health and ensuring fair practices in the food trade.
  • Membership: Open to all Member Nations and Associate Members of FAO and WHO interested in international food standards.
  • Current Members: 189 (188 Member Countries(Including India) and 1 Organization i.e. EU).
  • Meetings: Convenes annually, with sessions alternating between Geneva and Rome.

Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS)

  • About: BCBS is the global standard-setter for banking regulation, creating frameworks like Basel I–III to strengthen financial stability.
  • It was formed in 1974 after the Herstatt crisis, when a German bank collapsed.
  • Membership: Includes 45 members from 28 jurisdictions, covering major advanced and emerging economies including India.
  • Functions: Sets banking standards, promotes supervisory cooperation, monitors implementation, and identifies global financial risks.
  • Governance: The BCBS operates under the guidance of the Group of Central Bank Governors and Heads of Supervision (GHOS). 

Corbett Tiger Reserve

  • About: Corbett Tiger Reserve is Asia’s first national park established in 1936, renowned for its biodiversity including the world’s highest density of tigers. 
  • It was established as Hailey National Park and later renamed in 1956 to honour Jim Corbett, the hunter-turned-conservationist who helped create it.
  • It became the first national park to be included under Project Tiger in 1973.
  • Location:  Corbett lies in the Himalayan foothills of Uttarakhand. It has an undulating landscape with several valleys through which the Ramganga, Pallaen, and Sonanadi rivers flow. 
  • The reserve falls largely in the Bhabar and lower Shivalik region, known for its porous soil and deep water table.

Turkey is Ready to Host COP31 Climate Summit

  • COP31 is expected to be hosted by Turkey under a compromise agreement.
  • Australia will lead the negotiations despite not hosting the summit.
  • Bids for hosting COP31 were originally submitted by both nations in 2022.
  • A pre-COP meeting is planned in the Pacific region.

Southern Railway Introduces India’s First Coast-to-Coast Parcel Express

  • This is the first coast-to-coast parcel express service introduced by Indian Railways.
  • The route connects business centres across Tamil Nadu and Kerala through a weekly schedule.
  • High-capacity parcel vans form the core composition of the train.
  • Destination-labelled coaches enhance organised logistics handling at each halt.

Nitish Kumar to Be Sworn In as Bihar Chief Minister for the 10th Time

  • Nitish Kumar will be sworn in as Bihar CM for the 10th time.
  • Gandhi Maidan has hosted multiple past oath ceremonies for Nitish Kumar.
  • BJP is the single-largest party in the new Bihar assembly.
  • The NDA coalition includes JDU, BJP, LJP(RV), HAM(S), and RLM.
