Justice Surya Kant Becomes India’s 53rd Chief Justice
- Justice Surya Kant is India’s 53rd Chief Justice, succeeding Justice B.R. Gavai.
- He served as Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court before joining the Supreme Court.
- He was appointed Haryana’s youngest Advocate General in 2000.
- India’s courts currently have 5.29 crore pending cases across all levels.
Oscars 2026: Animation, Documentary and International Films Announced
- There are 35 eligible films in the Best Animated Feature category.
- The documentary category received 201 submissions, the highest among all sections.
- International feature submissions total 86 for the 98th Oscars.
- Shortlists for animation, documentary and international categories will be announced on 16 December.
SC Outlines Limits of Judicial Review on Assent to State Bills

- The court rejected the concept of ‘deemed assent’, calling it unconstitutional.
